Download: MP3 (1.1 Mb)

Jeremias Filipe is a member of Justiça Ambiental, an organization of Mozambique that is part of environmentalist federation Friends of the Earth International since 2008. He is participating in the Sustainability School of Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC), which is being held in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil.

The Mozambican activist believes that the exchanges with his Latin American peers are extremely important. He also said that the capitalist system is gaining on the world and there is an increasing advertising of the exploitation of natural resources. This calls for “a stronger presence of social organizations that work with the most affected populations, defending resources, and our heritage, the heritage of the communities”.

Brazilian organizations such as the Movement of Dam-Affected People (MAB) and the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) are participating in the Sustainability School. In terms of these movements, Jeremias highlighted the “political capacity building that Latin America has to offer to their activists, in terms of organization and political guidance”.

The activist also made reference to the situation of his country: “in this moment, Mozambique is caught in a crossfire, due to the interests of the big international megaprojects and multinational companies that have access to the country”.

He made reference to the exploitation of coal in the central region of Mozambique which will be carried out, among others, by Brazilian transnational company Vale do Rio Doce.

This company aims to produce 26 million tons of coal per year, to feed iron and steel companies in Brazil. Despite Vale do Rio Doce hasn´t started their operations yet, the Mozambican people are already protesting the displacement of 1500 families. Also, the African activist explained the energy situation of his country and questioned the advances of the false solutions to climate change.
