Perpetual Demand for Truth and Justice

Uruguay: Demonstration Against the Impunity of State Terrorism

On Monday, February 25, thousands of people gathered at Plaza Libertad in Montevideo, Uruguay, to protest against the recent ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice that legitimates the impunity of human rights abuses committed during the country’s latest dictatorship (1973-1985).

After the failed attempts to repeal and annul the so called “impunity law”, under which investigations into the forced disappearances depend on the government’s political will, initiatives to reach truth and justice in Uruguay were promoted by the families of the victims, with wide support of social organizations.

REDES-Friends of the Earth Uruguay and Real World Radio called the mobilization by pointing out that “at times when several Latin American countries are making moves to clarify and try the incidents happened under the dictatorships, a process promoted by social organizations, the ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice of Uruguay is shameful”.

The following gallery of photos captured by Lucia Surroca reflect what happened during the demonstration when people demanded truth and justice.
