Alan Garcia’s administration is promoting several “unconstitutional” decrees aiming to “privatize infrastructure megaprojects” in Peru, especially in the Amazon region, according to AIDESEP (Inter-Ethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Rainforest).
AIDESEP strongly rejects these governmental initiatives because “they go against life” and national sovereignty, according to a press release.
The decrees passed will allow the building of 33 infrastructure megaprojects without needing environmental impacts assessments.
“We condemn the government’s attitude, since it is not only giving away what’s left in the country, but it is acting against the Consultation Rights of Indigenous Peoples”, reads the press release.
AIDESEP also stated that Garcia is opposing the institutionalization of consultation rights to facilitate the giving away of natural resources of the country. The Peruvian organization brought many of these denunciations to the World Social Forum that was held in Dakar, Senegal, a few days ago.
Daysi Zapata Farzadi, Vice-President of AIDESEP, said in an interview with Spanish website Más Voces that the building of hydroelectric projects, including the controversial Inambare Project, will displace 43 thousand indigenous people.
