On Friday, at the South-South Summit on Climate Justice and Climate Finance which is being carried out as part of the activities parallel to the COP16, there was a demonstration in Cancun called by international network Jubilee South. Several members of the environmentalist federation Friends of the Earth participated.

The aim of the mobilization was to demand the World Bank to step out of climate finance. The demonstrators marched from the Municipal Building to downtown Cancun and finally to a Wal-Mart supermarket, to denounce “the complicity of transnational corporations in the causes of climate change”, said Pablo Herrero, member of Jubilee South, in an interview with Real World Radio.

In addition, Herrero pointed out that Wal-Mart “has an extensive record of imposition of neoliberal policies that go against the food sovereignty of our peoples, that go against climate, and we want to denounce this. Not just the responsibility of the Northern governments and financial institutions, but also transnational companies which have led to this situation which risks the life of the planet itself”.

Meanwhile, Friends of the Earth´s Chair, Nnimmo Bassey, said that the mobilization was one of the most significant activities at the COP16, since it denounces the role of the World Bank in climate finance and opposes to it. According to Nnimmo Bassey, the World Bank is one of the most harmful institutions in terms of climate change.

“It is time for the whole world to stand together, for the mass movements to stand together to demand the World Bank out of climate finance”, said the Chair of the environmentalist federation.
