Bolivian President Evo Morales arrived on Thursday to Cancun, where the UN Climate Change Convention is taking place, and participated in a public event organized by La Via Campesina at the Global Forum on Environmental and Social Justice. Morales made reference to the need of a “neo-socialism that saves the planet”.

Tens of social movements and organizations from the five continents gathered in downtown Cancun, where La Via Campesina´s camp is located and read the final declaration of the forum organized by the international network as an activity parallel to the UN COP16.

Nnimmo Bassey, Chair of Friends of the Earth International, and Secretary General of the Latin American Confederation of Rural Organizations (CLOC), Luis Andrango, also spoke to the public.

But the highlight of the day was the speech by Bolivian President who proposed “ a new doctrine for life”. “If capitalism is synonym of death, why can´t we propose a new doctrine for life?”, he said. The President also said that this new doctrine would confront “capitalism, neoliberalism, colonialism and therefore imperialism”. “We would like to propose a neo-socialism, the new socialism to confront capitalism”, he said.

Morales explained his idea and asked the social movements and the presidents of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) to analyze it as soon as possible. He proposed “a new socialism based on sharing, not competing, based not only on the class struggle, which is important, but also on a life with harmony with Mother Earth, with dignity, but mainly with equality”.

The Bolivian President also said “the class struggle used to be enough, but now we have the responsibility to not only save the worker, but also planet Earth, respecting our differences and aiming at equality within the society”.
