For the second time in this month, a journalist was murdered in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. He was Georgino Orellana, and he was shot in the head while leaving his work at Television de Honduras network, last Tuesday.
“How many times have we warned about this? Are we going to write another statement and return to accepting the “collateral damage” of this struggle?” said journalist Samuel Trigueros according to the blog “Honduras en Lucha”, with reference to the murder.
Trigueros described Orellana as “a lawyer (…), writer and painter, teacher at the National University of Honduras in Valle de Sula, loving father of two children and husband of Silvia Munguia. Georgino worked in favor of the affected people”.
Luis Antonio Chevez Hernandez, journalist and host of a show in Radio W105, was murdered on April 13th, also in San Pedro Sula.
The murder of Chevez raised the concern of Reporters Without Borders and of the General Director of the UNESCO, Irina Bokova.
According to Europa Press, Bokova said: “I am gravely concerned about repeated attacks on journalists in Honduras and trust the authorities will spare no effort in pursuing those behind these crimes. It is important for stability and rule of law that media workers in the country be able to exercise their right of freedom of expression without fearing for their lives.”
Since Porfirio Lobo took office, after illegitimate elections, according to the popular movement against the dictatorship, seven journalists have been murdered in Honduras. At the same time, several media have been threatened.
If we add these murders to the ones which took place in 2009, under the dictatorship, 11 journalists were murdered in Honduras. The crimes are still unpunished.
