While the mission of the Inter American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is still in Honduras to document the abuses to fundamental rights perpetrated by the coup regime led by Roberto Micheletti, the renowned organization Amnesty International (AI) issued a report showing the high level of violence against the opponents of the dictatorship installed in the country in June 28th, after military officers kidnapped and deported President Manuel Zelaya.

Amnesty International accused the de facto government of carrying out massive arrests and beating the demonstrators who opposed the regime as a punishment for their rejection to the dictatorship. In addition, Esther Major, Central American researcher at Amnesty International, said that the Honduran military and police officers are using repression to “deter” those people who were contemplating joining the peaceful protests.

“The police were throwing stones; they cornered us, threw us on the floor, on our stomachs and beat us. They took our cameras from us, beat us if we lifted our heads and even when we were getting into the police wagons”, said a student according to Amnesty International.

In addition to testimonies, AI gathered photos to prove the level of repression suffered by the demonstrators, showing baton marks still on the bodies of the people who were peacefully claiming the reinstatement of democracy.
From Lima, Zelaya said he will return to his country soon and made reference to Micheletti´s declarations about his life being in danger by the actions of the opponents.

“The assumptions Micheletti has made are part of his ghosts, who have led him to commit so many mistakes against the Honduran people”, said Zelaya on his way to Peru to meet with President Alan García, in the framework of a tour to meet with several Latin American presidents in order to gather support.

“The ones with guns are the coup perpetrators led by him”, the President stated.
