Three communities of the Mexican state of Jalisco could be under water if El Zapotillo dam is built. The project is promoted by right-wing administration of Felipe Calderon. The communities opposing the dam continue resisting, despite the continuous threats and harassment.

The Mexican Institute for Community Development (Imdec) issued a press release to be sent to the Executive Branch, to report the death threats suffered by the activists of the Committee Salvemos Temaca, Acasico y Pelmarejo, and other leaders who criticized the energy plan.

In the document they warn that the lives several activists – including Manuel de Jesus and Juan Agustin Carvajal Jimenez (members of the committee); Marco Joachim von Borstel Nilsson (of Imdec) and reporter Jade Ramirez Cuevas of Medios UDG Noticias Red Radio Universidad de Guadalajara- were at risk.

“They will die soon because they are causing trouble”, said in a challenging tone someone who entered a the premises where the assembly was taking place to call new protests against El Zapotillo.

The three assailants introduced themselves as public servants, and questioned the reporter for “being with the press”. “Well the town will be flooded, and the water will cover the houses and the statue of the square”, they said.

The conversation become more aggressive and the death threats continued.

The denunciation, which had been backed by international organizations, demands the government authorities to immediately investigate the incidents, which were already reported before Jalisco’s General Attorney’s Office.

Meanwhile, La Jornada newspaper reported that last Friday, 26 federal MPs supporting former presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador visited the community of Temacapulín and called for the suspension of the works of El Zapotillo dam.
