November, 2012 - The Palestinian people is once again attacked by Israeli military forces in a new operation called « Pillar of Defense». The bombings by Israel that started on the 14th, and apparently ended yesterday (21st) after the announcement of a ceasefire, resulted in the death of 162 Palestinians and over 1000 injured people, most of them civilians. Several children were among them. In this context, the World Social Forum Free Palestine is scheduled to begin on November 28th through December 1st, in Porto Alegre, Brazil. This is a space built so that social organizations and movements around the world develop and discuss ideas, share experiences and plan strategies and campaigns aiming to strengthen the solidarity with the struggle for the liberation of the Palestinian people. Real World Radio will be present in the event, covering the discussions, solidarity expressions and strategies of struggle that will take place there.

The World Social Forum Free Palestine began on Thursday in Porto Alegre, place of birth of the World Social Forum. Thursday marked an emblematic day for the Palestinian people, since 65 years ago (on November 29, 1947) the United Nations General Assembly declared the division of Palestine into an Arab State and a Jewish State. Since then, the advance of the Jewish State over the Arab State has been dramatic. It is estimated that the State of Israel has taken over nearly 80% of Arab territory. The United Nations declared November 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. Besides, it was precisely on Thursday that the United Nations General Assembly voted to recognize Palestine as a “Nonmember observer State”. Read more

At the end of a long day of activities at the World Social Forum Free Palestine, activists from different organizations who are participating in the event took to the streets of Porto Alegre to express their solidarity with the Palestinian people. Over 6,000 people marched from Largo Glênio Peres to the Usina do Gasômetro, chanting slogans and carrying the flags of different movements, as well as banners in defense of the Palestinian people.
