Mexican company Aguas de Saltillo, subsidiary of Spanish Aguas de Barcelona (owned by French Suez), will be tried by the Permanent Peoples´ Tribunal in Madrid, Spain, due to their overexploitation of water tables, decreasing quality of drinking water and keeping the distribution networks in poor conditions. The company is also accused of violating the Mexican Constitution and the Access to Information Law. Read more

Tauccamarca community, located near Cuzco, Peru, is home to 300 inhabitants who depend on agriculture and cattle. On October 22nd, 1999, this community was hit by a tragedy when 44 children were poisoned for eating breakfast contaminated with pesticide Paration, produced by Bayer, in their school. 24 children died, and the rest have serious neurological consequences and learning disabilities. Social organizations and movements promoting the Peoples´ Summit from May 14-18, in Madrid, capital city of Spain, welcomed the decision by 10 Presidents of UNASUR (Union of South American Nations) to not recognize Porfirio Lobo as Honduran President. Social movements also highlighted that several Presidents of the region warned that they will not attend the Summit of European Union-Latin America and the Caribbean Heads of State to be held in Madrid in May 17th and 18th due to the Spanish insistence on inviting Lobo.
