Alexandre Anderson de Souza, from Brazil, has suffered four attempts of murder and needs police protection 24/7, due to his activity as President of the Association of Fisherfolks of Guanabara Bay (AHOMAR) and his participation in Sindipesca in Rio de Janerio.
The leader is now part of the National Program of Protection of Human Right Advocates, a body of the Brazilian Presidency, due to his struggles for the rights of fisherfolks and for defending Guanabara Bay, one of the most important bays in the country, located on the Atlantic Ocean. Anderson de Souza is a leader of the struggle against the plans oil company Petrobras has for the region.
Two members of this Association were murdered in front of his families. Currently, the fisherfolks of Guanabara Bay cannot fish as a consequence of the installation of gas pipes and gas terminals by Petrobras, which are degrading the environment. Despite these impacts, the company has not granted any kind of compensation to the fisherfolks.
Real World Radio´s correspondent in Brazil, Adriano Marcelo, interviewed the AHOMAR leader during a meeting of the Brazilian Environmental Justice Network. Anderson de Souza highlighted the importance of denouncing the media and Petrobras´ shareholders and said that this company is “deceiving the public” since their supposed “socio-environmental responsibility” is not reflected in their practices.
