State violence and political confrontation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have made headlines in the past weeks. A Palestinian radio in Jerusalem uses the web to make the voice of the social movements reach the public, as the real actors in overcoming a war that seems to be endless.
The radio is called “Radio Muqawama” (which means Resistance in Arabic). It broadcasts shows in Spanish on the Internet with the demands of the Palestinian and Israeli social movements that are willing to put an end to the conflict.
The productions of Radio Muqawama are available on the website of the Alternative Information Center (http//alternativenews.org) as well as on the social networking site Facebook. The people who write the daily news for the web radio highlight the importance of having a Spanish website in order to reach the Palestinians and Israelis who are in the exile in Europe -especially in Spain- and in Latin America.
Marcel Masferrer is coordinator and host of “Radio Muqawama”. He told Spanish news agency EFE that the radio is a tool to raise awareness and inform about the conflict with an “innovative and powerful” format, thanks to the use of Internet.
The program is focused on the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories. “We are not impartial to the occupation. We believe that we cannot use the excuse of neutrality to forget about human rights.”, says the Catalan host. He added that “when there is an absolute blockade to a line of thought, the alternative channel has the task of giving voice to the people who is silenced”.
The fundamental rights of the Palestinian people are present on the radio, as well as in all the information published on the AIC website, says Masferrer. He mentioned the right to end the occupation, the right of the Palestinians living in Israel to end discrimination and the right to the return of the refugees”.
The AIC website also offers the latest reports -in English- of the situation the Palestinian residents in Gaza and Israel are going through, as well as the Israelis who oppose the occupation by the Israeli state.
A conflict as old as this one, AIC coordinator told EFE, “can only be unblocked through the grassroots movements, which are capable of causing a change that will break the existing power relations, something which can neither be achieved through governments nor war”.
