With the long-term goal of “overcoming the excluding capitalist system and building an egalitarian and fair society”, the 3rd Forum Social Missoes started in Santo Angelo, Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state, Brazil. Thousands of representatives from social organizations and movements from RS, Argentina and Uruguay are expected in the different conferences, debates and panels.

The Landless Rural Workers Movement of Brazil (MST), the Movement of Peasant Women of the country, the World March of Women, several indigenous groups and Friends of the Earth Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, are some of the organizations which will be present in Santo Angelo.

The aim of the forum, according to its official website, is to build a space for socialization and discussion of the main issues of the World Social Forum, in order to assess the paradigms that dominate current societies, with the goal of achieving “another possible world”.

The forum will take place from March 18th to March 20th at the Regional University of Alto Uruguay and Misiones (URI), a promoter of the activity together with NGOs Another World is Possible and the Regional Association for Development and Education. It is also supported by Santo Angelo Coast Guard, the national government and the Workers Union (CUT), among others.

Sugarcane production in RS, agrotoxics and their effects on human health and the environment, the situation and challenges faced by the agrarian reform in Brazil, and cellulose pulp production in the Southern Cone are some of the issues to be analyzed. Building of dams, unsustainability of the energy model of the capitalist system, and the role of the MST in Latin American integration and rural education, are some of the other issues that will be addressed.

Member of parliament for the Workers Party, Elvino Bon Gass, said that the forum will provide alternatives to the current world crisis through sustainability based on libertarian ideals, according to the website of the forum.

Meanwhile, Gilberto Corazza, Santo Angelo´s Mayor, member of the Workers´ Party as well, called social organizations and the population in general to participate in the forum since it is a “rare” opportunity to discuss a new model of society, where values such as equality are essential.
