A delegation of the National Front of Popular Resistance (FNRP), the main group fighting against Profirio Lobo’s dictatorship in Honduras, met Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Saturday 16.
During the meeting the aspects linked with the possible return of Honduras’ legitimate President and the return of Honduras to the Organization of American States (OAS) were discussed.
“We demand the safe return of the FNRP’s coordinator, Manuel Zelaya and of all the exiled, the respect of human rights, the calling of a Constituent Assembly and the recognition of the FNRP as a political group that may engage in future elections”, said FNRP representative Juan Barahona, in an interview with journalist Giorgio Trucchi.
Barahona said that during the meeting with Chavez, the members of the resistance submitted a document with proposals. It is expected that Colombian president, Juan Manuel Santos will also participate in the mediation for Zelaya’s return.
There is a key point for the FNRP “The return of Manuel Zelaya and the people in the exile should happen together with the enforcement of human rights and the respect of life”, he warned.
Meanwhile, president Chavez said after the meeting with Zelaya that he was happy to contribute to the reinstatement of peace and democracy in Honduras.
He also took the commitment that Latin America becomes a “democratic zone where true peace rules and where there are no wars, no coup d’états, and no imperial agressions from anyone”.
Barahona also spoke about the situation in Honduras during an interview with Telesur. There he said the Honduran judiciary under Lobo’s regime is biased, and has shown no will to dismiss the trials against Zelaya.
