Two days before the kick off of the National Congress on Lands, Territories and Sovereignty (CNTTS), to be held in Cali, Colombia, a common agenda towards building a “popular power” is necessary while there is growing alert over extractive projects in the country.

Rafael Coicue, member of the Association of Indigenous Cabildos of Norte del Cauca (ACIN), the host organization and the promoter of the Social Resistance Group told Real World Radio about the existing expectation over the event and made a call for people to participate from both inside and outside Colombia.

Coicue said that the main concern of this organization is the current legislative agenda, as well as the orientation of Santos’ administration.
He also reported about the marches that will arrive in Cali next September 29 to begin the CNTTS.

Coicue said there are high expectations around the CNTTS’ chapter on “Armed Conflict and War”, in order to set the basis for a conflict that has hit indigenous organizations in Norte del Cauca and in the Southwest of Colombia, really hard. Since the creation of ACIN we have been clear about the autonomy and social and civil struggle. He added that the war is being really hard.

“After the installation of the High Mountain Battalion in the southwest there have been lots of conflicts. Battalions, mine fields, arrests, murders, destruction of houses, murder of children...we need to have a clear political proposal, to build a life plan for after the war”, he said. They believe the organization of a popular consultation for a peace process in Colombia is important.
