After taking refuge in Nicaraguan Embassy in Lima for several days, the Peruvian government finally allowed former president of the Inter-ethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Forest (AIDESEP), Alberto Pizango, to leave the country.

Pizango had to seek political asylum in Nicaragua, after the Peruvian government blamed him for the deaths of police officers which took place while the police tried to clear an indigenous blockade in a violent way .

The violent incidents took place on June 5th, in Bagua Province, Peru, and led to the deaths of tens of indigenous people and police officers, calling the attention at an international level.

The indigenous peoples were peacefully protesting to reject a series of legislative decrees promoted by Alan Garcia´s administration, which would authorize the industrial exploitation of the Amazon forest.

Two of these decrees were abolished this week by the government, which agreed to negotiate with indigenous people through the president of the Council of Ministers, Yehude Simon. Shortly after the negotiation, Simon announced that he will leave office once a solution to the conflict is reached.

The indigenous people, who softened the measures of protest after the negotiation with the government, are claiming the abolition of all decrees, which were adopted in the framework of the Free Trade Agreement between Peru and the US.

Recently, the International Labour Organization (ILO) joined the criticism to the Peruvian governments, demanding Garcia to make all efforts to ensure that the indigenous peoples affected by any legislation related to the exploration or exploitation of natural resources be consulted.
