Brazil: video about environmental crime in Mariana and the relentless struggle of the MAB
The Movement of People Affected by Dams (MAB) of Brazil launched a new video on what is considered the worst socioenvironmental crime in the history of Brazil, which took place on November 5th, 2015, after a toxic waste dam of Samarco mining company collapsed in Mariana, Minas Gerais State.
The video, titled "Quanto Vale" (How much is it worth?) includes the testimonies of the local inhabitants, who talked about the horror felt that day, the huge pain caused and some of its social and environmental consequences.
A malfunction in Samarco´s dam (owned by Brazilian company Vale and British BHP Billiton) caused the pouring of toxic waste to Doce River and spread tens of millions of cubic meters of mud and waste from iron ore extraction. As a result of the tragedy, 17 people were killed. The Brazilian government declared it as the worst environmental catastrophe in the history of the country.
On October 31st, 2016, the MAB mobilized from Regência, in Espirito Santo State, to Mariano (in the opposite direction of Samarco´s mud), and in November 5th, 1000 people marched in commemoration of the victims, demanding the damage caused to be repaired and the people responsible to be punished.
