Uruguay: mobilization demands justice for Berta Cáceres and that Gustavo Castro is allowed to leave Honduras

Dozens of people met on Monday, in Montevideo, Uruguay, outside the Honduran Consulate in Uruguay to demand justice for the murder of Lenca indigenous leader Berta Cáceres, which took place on Thursday in La Esperanza municipality, Intibucá department, Honduras.

The demonstrators, gathered by environmental organization REDES-Friends of the Earth Uruguay and the feminist group Cotidiano Mujer, also demanded an end to the criminalization of the Council of Indigenous and Popular Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) that was coordinated by Berta. They also demanded the Honduran authorities allow Mexican environmental activist Gustavo Castro to return his country. Gustavo was with Berta when she was murdered, and is being investigated by the Honduran Prosecution Office.

Gustavo is the coordinator of the organization Otros Mundos Chiapas - Friends of the Earth Mexico, and has testified several times before the Honduran Prosecution Office. COPINH has warned that his life is in danger as long as he stays in Honduras. The environmental activist tried to leave Honduras on Sunday but was held by the authorities at the airport.

The participants of the mobilization in Montevideo expressed their solidarity with the Lenca indigenous people, with COPINH and with their struggle in defense of their rights and territories. The demonstrators wanted to deliver a letter to the Honduran diplomats, but nobody greeted them at the Consulate.
