Social movements and organizations from the American continent send letter to UN expert on Haiti

The Jubilee South Americas network sent on Tuesday a letter to UN independent expert on the Human Rights situation in Haiti, Gustavo Gallón, who is visiting the country. The letter addresses a series of concerns and proposals and especially focuses on the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).

Jubilee South Americas is a broad network of social movements, popular and religious organizations and campaigns, among other actors of the continent. In addition to their signature, the letter includes the signatures of Dialogo 2000 – Jubilee South Argentina, Red Jubileu Sul Brazil, Nora Cortiñas and Mirta Baravalle of Madres de Plaza de Mayo, also from Argentina; Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and Camillle Chalmers, executive director of the Haitian Platform for an Alternative Development (PAPDA).

The entire letter can be read here (in Spanish): http://haitinominustah.info/2016/03/01/carta-abierta-al-experto-independiente-sobre-ddhh-en-haiti/

Jubilee South Americas highlights the recommendations made by Gallón with reference to the need to pay “urgent and persistent” attention by the Haitian government and the international community to the complex social reality experienced in the country, where over a third of the population suffers hunger and most don´t have access to drinking water and other basic services.

The letter addresses the meaning of the presence of the MINUSTAH troops in Haiti, a mission that turns 12 years in 2016. “The MINUSTAH is not a solution to the challenges faced by the Haitian people, but another obstacle”, states the letter issued yesterday. This is why they reaffirm the need to immediately withdraw UN troops and end the occupation in the country. Nevertheless, Jubilee demands the “recognition, sanction and repair” to the multiple crimes committed by these troops, which they denounce are behind systematic violations to the rights of the population, including “sexual abuses and the rape of children, young people, and women”.

The signatories also recognize and support the remarks made by expert Gallón in his first report about the MINUSTAH´s responsibility in the “deadly” cholera epidemic.
The Jubilee South Americas´ letter highlights at the end that “the goal of this action is to contribute with the strengthening of the different expressions of solidarity that are part of the permanent campaign for the withdrawal of the MINUSTAH troops”. They also invite those interested to join the campaign and receive more information to write to haiti.no.minustah@gmail.com and visit http://haitinominustah.info.
