“There is a conspiracy going on against the process of change led by President Evo Morales. It has the epicenter in Washington DC and it is being implemented by Bolivian and foreign political operatives,” warned Atilio Borón, an Argentinian sociologist and political scientist, at the opening of an opinion piece in the Mexican newspaper La Jornada on Thursday.
“They use the argument of an alleged defense of democracy and the fight against corruption and drug trafficking, and their goal is to prevent the “Yes” votes from winning in the referendum of constitutional reform of the State next February 21st,” he explains.
The referendum will ask the people if the Constitution can be partially reformed to allow President Morales and Vice President Álvaro García Linera to stand for re-election for a fourth term in the general election of 2019.
Media like Telesur, Prensa Latina, Cuba Debate and state-owned Bolivian Information Agency are reporting these days about the conspiracy of the US government to harm its Bolivian counterpart in the referendum.
On Thursday, La Jornada of Mexico took its turn with the op-ed by Borón, a highly respected analyst in Latin American social movements. “Like never before, with less visible methods for the citizens, the US, through its agencies for subversion, as the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI), both with resources provided by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), is strongly supporting the actions of the Bolivian opposition aimed at preventing the referendum on February 21st, which represents a further step in the consolidation of the political project led by Evo Morales, an indigenous president whom has radically changed Bolivia,” said the author.
According to Borón, “the character of the brutal US offensive is explained by the current importance of Bolivia for the processes of change in Latin America, particularly after the presidential elections in Argentina and legislative elections in Venezuela.” Full story can be found at: http://www.jornada.unam.mx/2016/02/11/opinion/031a1mun
Meanwhile, in the blog www.atilioboron.com.ar, under the title “With Evo, now more than ever,” the Argentinian author dispatched harder still. He began by saying: “[Morales] expelled the DEA from Bolivia, defeated the coup plans by the CIA, thwarted an attempt to separate Eastern Bolivia [Bolivia’s half-moon] from the Altiplano, expelled the ambassador Phillip Goldberg, the USAID, he transformed Bolivia as nobody had done in 500 years, he integrated the indigenous majorities that today are governing Bolivia, and even the very Financial Times devotes an extra 60 pages talking about the great transformation of Bolivia under the Evo administration.”
And then, he declares: “Does anyone believe that Washington could sit idly before the referendum? They launched an impressive smear campaign, a new media Condor Plan seeking to make the truth disappear, instead of disappearing people as before. So, EVERYBODY WITH EVO; now more than ever.”
