Uruguay: 3rd Public Forum on Food Sovereignty

As a follow-up to the national and international efforts to deepen the concept of Food Sovereignty as a right of peoples to define their own food production and consumption practices, and as a contribution to Uruguayan efforts to achieve changes in the current agri-food system incorporating state education, the need of differentiated public policies and territorial management, Redes – Friends of the Earth, together with the Rural Education Department of the National Education Council, Agustin Ferrero Center and other organizations are organizing the 3rd Food Sovereignty, Education and Territoriality Forum in Uruguay.

The Forum will take place on November 11 and will include two thematic tables (Territorial Food Sovereignty, Education for Food Sovereignty) and a dialogue where experiences of advances and challenges will be shared.

The Forum will highlight a gender perspective in the approach to the issues proposed and it will also include the proposal of the National Agroecology Plan that is being discussed at the level of farmers, consumers, researchers and technician organizations of the country.

It will also be a space to share Food Sovereignty projects by the Rural Development Agency of Canelones Government and association experiences for access to land and co-ownership under development in the framework of the National Colonization Institute.

Real World Radio interviewed Agustin Ferreiro Center´s Director, Alejandra Dego, who will participate as panelist in the forum. Dego said that the idea behind the forum is to raise awareness and jointly build a better education. “For this reason, one of the themes the Forum will deal with this year will be “Education for Food Sovereignty””, she said.

“The Rural Development Agency and Agustin Ferreiro Center are carrying out actions to work along these lines, and one of our main actions is precisely the organization of this Forum”, she added.

On the concept of Food Sovereignty, Dego said that the Center adheres to the definition by La Via Campesina “which basically means the right of peoples to choose what to cultivate, consume and preserve of their cultures”. ”We know that food is closely linked to the culture of the peoples”, she added.

Alejandra also made reference to the relationship between education and food sovereignty. She said: “Education is necessary to be critical, to be able to defend our cultural values, in order to live in the way we want to live, to achieve our sovereignty, including our food sovereignty”.

Lastly, she invited everyone to participate in the 3rd Forum on Food Sovereignty, Education and Territoriality and to “build this proposal together”.
