Several social organizations and people of Uruguay gathered in the “Coordination for Palestine” carried out a demonstration on Wednesday in the capital, Montevideo, in solidarity with the Palestinian people, exactly in front of the headquarters of the Embassy of Israel.
They joined in this way to a series of protests in various parts of the world in response to
the escalation of Israeli violence in Palestine territory.
They demanded an immediate halt to the executions of young Palestinians, freedom for all Palestinian political prisoners in Israel, including over 200 children, and the dismantling of the “wall and the colonial and apartheid system”.
They also demanded from the Uruguayan government and social organizations to “break all diplomatic, commercial, union, cultural, academic, military, police and security ties with Israel, and the FTA of Israel-MERCOSUR” (Southern Common Market).
Uruguayan international organizations joined the campaign “Boycott, Divestment and
Sanctions (BDS) to Israel” (boicotisrael.net).
To learn more about the demonstration in Montevideo and its causes, Real World Radio interviewed Alejandra de Bittencourt, a member of the Free Palestine Committee, which is part of the "Coordination for Palestine".
In the press release issued before the rally, the Coordination warned that in October, more than 70 people were killed in occupied Palestine, more than 1,000 were arrested and more than 6,000 injured by bullets, tear gas inhalation and burns.
“In 20 years of the fake ’peace process’, Palestinian youth saw how Israel advanced on the dispossession while corrupt leaders were enriched collaborating with the enemy, and this grew among the daily repression and denial of all rights, seeing their land and water
stolen, their parents and siblings imprisoned or killed, their crops uprooted or burned, their property demolished by the occupation forces or vandalized by armed settlers living in their usurped lands. Rebellion is the only possible answer, and the Palestinian youth has said ENOUGH!” the text added.
