16 October 2015 | Videos | UN Climate Change COP 21 | Resisting neoliberalism | Climate Justice and Energy | Food Sovereignty
On the World Food Sovereignty Day, la Via Campesina International and Grain launched the video “Together, we can cool the planet!”, which explains how the agroindustrial food system is one of the main causes of climate change.
The video also aims to contribute with elements they consider key in order to cool the planet and truly combat the climate crisis.
“In the Americas, Asia, Europe and Africa, for many years, we have been criticizing false solutions to climate change like GMOs, the “green” economy, and “climate-smart” agriculture”, states the press release issued by La Via Campesina and Grain to launch the new video.
“No two ways about it: the solution to the climate crisis is in the hands of small farmers, along with consumers who choose agroecological products from local markets. This is the message we’re taking to the Paris Climate Change Conference this December”, they add.
The 21st Conference of the Parties (COP 21) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change will take place from November 30 to December 11 and La Via Campesina will join numerous movements and social organizations from around the world, who will demand real solutions to climate change in the streets.
The network of peasant organizations and Grain highlight that they have been denouncing that the agroindustrial food system is responsible for half of all greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change.
“But the world’s governments are refusing to face these problems head on, and the Paris Summit in December is approaching without any effective commitment to doing so on their part”, they state.
In addition, La Via Campesina and Grain invite people to join the struggle against large scale industrial agriculture and climate change, and in favor of peasant agriculture. They also ask to share the video, below, which is also available in Spanish and French.
