The Canadian Supreme Court of Justice ratified the sentence issued by the Appeals Tribunal of Ontario, recognizing that the 30.000 Ecuadorian indigenous people and peasants that sued oil company Chevron are allowed to demand compensation for 9.5 billion dollars, after proving the responsibility of the multinational company in the environmental damage caused in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Humberto Piaguaje, coordinator of the Union of People Affected by Texaco (UDAPT) said that despite a discredit campaign by a New York Tribunal which stated that this was a case of extortion against the company, the decision of the Canadian Court is a huge advance. After 22 years of litigation, it will be possible to repair the territories in environmental, social, cultural and infrastructure terms.
Piaguaje said that the compensation is not enough to repair environmental and health impacts on many of the inhabitants, since several of them died from cancer and hundreds of animal and plant species have been destroyed after 27 years of oil extraction.
The trial to collect the money is expected to begin in Canada shortly and the money will go to a trust fund made of national ministries and indigenous authorities to ensure an effective control in the management of the resource when implementing the actions to repair the territories affected by Chevron.
