The 6th edition of the Native Seed and Family Farming Festival of Uruguay, which took place last weekend in Guichon, Paysandu department, was mainly a homage to the genetic and cultural accumulation of varieties that are key to feed the people of the world.
“Native seeds are ours”, “we can improve them collectively, care for them more”, “they give us independence from transnational seed companies”, “they are better adapted to our living and production conditions”, “they provide riche food which bring back memories from our childhood”…
The phrases, reflections and descriptions that could be heard about native seeds during the 6th Festival are almost endless.
In fact, one the spaces of the Saving Native Seeds Network in their national meeting held before the Festival, dealt with how to define native seeds, and why to do so.
The following day, as seen in these pictures, theory and practice took over: presentations about agroecology promotion experiences in Uruguay and Brazil; descriptions and alternatives to agribusiness from Argentina to the US, and the concept of financialization of nature were key issues while the exchange of seeds, and the associated knowledge, was constant during the entire event through the Biodiversity Market.

The Festival was organized by the Native Seeds Network, the Group of Guichon Neighbors in Defense of Natural Resources, Redes-Friends of the Earth and agrarian schools of Paysandu and Guichon.
