What´s on the table at the climate talks in Lima

In a press conference held on Monday, at the opening of the UN COP 20 on Climate Change taking place in Lima, Peru, activist Meena Raman of Third World Network and Friends of the Earth Malaysia called attention to the need to start developing North-South adaptation and finance/technology transfer measures to address the climate crisis.

Raman expressed her concern over the pressure exerted by developed countries to only discuss mitigation measures (reducing polluting emissions) for the agreement expected to be adopted in Paris, at COP 21. Developed countries are only “pledging” to cut emissions. According to Raman, there needs to be an agreement based on equity and fair share, not pledges.

The payment of the climate debt, as considered by Friends of the Earth International, implies drastic emission reductions by the Global North, the transfer of funds to the South for mitigation and adaptation to climate change and North-South technology transfer. All these elements must be included in the Paris agreement, said Raman.

Meanwhile, Asad Rehman, of Friends of the Earth England, Wales and Northern Ireland made reference, among other things, to the need to transform the energy system, giving way to clean, community-based and decentralized energy.
