The opening ceremony focused around the defense of the countryside, water and seeds. Women from different Chilean peasant territories gave seeds, fruits and rural products as offerings, together with poems and the singing of Aymara soprano singer Sandra Caqueo.

“The women together will raise the flag of peasant and popular feminism and will fight for a true understanding of our concepts. Our second National Congress is based on the thoughts of the grassroots movements which have reasserted their commitment to strengthen organizations, defend peasant agriculture and the agriculture of native peoples”, were some of the ideas heard at the ceremony.

Agriculture Minister Carlos Furche participated in the event and carried a message from President Michelle Bachelet.

The images attached to this article show different moments of this 2nd Congress, from the opening ceremony, thematic workshops and the presence of children who also discussed around concepts such as food sovereignty and the presence of different authorities.

Representatives of the commission of women of the Latin American Coordination of Countryside Organizations (CLOC-Via Campesina) also participated in the event.
