At the Sixth High Mountains and Lands Conference held last weekend in Colombia, communicators from Censat Agua Viva – Friends of the Earth Colombia interviewed Ivon Florez on behalf of Real World Radio. Florez is a member of Tierra Libre and she talked about the “Yes to Water, No to Oil” campaign and their assessment of the conference that took place in Pasca.

This campaign to defend life is made up of different environmental groups, community and social organizations who gathered together to defend the water and territory of the Sumapaz River and who have been implementing several activities over the past ten months within the communities aiming to protect water systems, agriculture and the territory of Sumapaz.

On September 16, in the framework of a caravan that travelled to Bogota, a petition was delivered to the President of the Republic with over 36,000 signatures requesting the suspension of all exploration and exploitation contracts in the region.

Ivon Florez also added that the most serious issues are related to the contracts allocated to international companies to extract hydrocarbons, which so far have six contracts in force that would affect the mountains, in addition to the damage caused by hydroelectric dams: “We will organize an environmental hearing to summon the companies that are exploiting our territories”, said Ivon.
